We’re using cups as our backend on a printer connected to the samba server via USB. Whats your print configuration?

http://lists.samba.org/archive/samba/2007-March/130671.html mentions this problem alright and it sounds like the devmode registry hack is the way to address it. Or is it sufficient to simply clean out old printers from this when migrating to a samba print environment? Is the problem that of mobile users with other printers in their print history?

I think cups is very suitable for network printing aswell – the nice thing about working through samba is that you get it for free (automatic installation of drivers and so on).

Hope you’re well,

-stephen

On our Samba2/3 boxen we have to remove HKCU/Printers/Devmodes & DevModes2 reg keys to make samba printing barely usable. We are moving to JetDirects and IPP printing on our Xeroxes (Xeroxen?) so it’s likely to become less of an issue but it’s worth mentioning I think. If we had stuck with the Linux print servers (Dell P75s!) we might have looked at enabling networked lpr or something.
